How Shorty Got His Name

This little story comes from my grandmother, his daughter. It's quite interesting.

The first day of school, his teacher asked him what his name was. He replied, "Son." Back then, many parents didn't name their children. They used to call them either Son or Daughter. Well, the teacher said, "No, you can't be called Son. Son is not a name. What is your name?" He sat there and thought about it awhile, and then decided to make his name J.P. from his grandfather's initials. His grandfather's name was Jim Pinkney Gore or James Pickney Gore depending on who you ask. So Shorty got to name himself. Later, people called him Shorty for the obvious reasons. Look at him standing beside his wife in this anniversary photo.

Shorty's Farmhouse

This picture was taken in 1959. It's of Shorty and Anne's home on Farm Road 2965 which was off of Highway 80 between Terrell and Wills Point.

How He Died

Shorty was out hunting with his grandson when he collapsed and died. Granny said he died doing what he loved and that is always the best way to go.
