Below each surname is a confirmed origin or a generic origin. For confirmed origins, the places listed are the birth places of the earliest known ancestors not born in the US. For generic origins, the places listed are in order by most likely to least likely. Not all possible places are listed since most names can be found in just about every European country. Additionally, immigrants to the US adopted English variants of their last name to better fit in so while the name itself may originate in the UK, the family may come from another country entirely. Still, it is highly likely that most of the names on this list come from the origins listed. :)
